The Governing Council of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has made history with the appointment of Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa as the 7th Vice-Chancellor of the institution — and the first female to hold the position in the university\'s 34-year history.
The announcement was made by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Comrade Fidelis Chukwunweike Edeh, shortly after the Council\'s 95th meeting, where members considered and approved the report of the Selection Panel. Prof. Akanwa emerged from a competitive process involving 22 professors.
Prof. Akanwa assumed office on March 1, 2026, succeeding the outgoing 6th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, whose five-year non-renewable tenure came to an end on February 28, 2026.
About the New Vice-Chancellor
Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa is a Professor of Educational Measurement and Evaluation. She joined MOUAU in 2010/2011 as an Associate Professor from Abia State University, Uturu, and was elevated to the rank of Full Professor in 2014. Prior to her appointment as Vice-Chancellor, she served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) of the university.
Her appointment is widely celebrated as a landmark moment for the institution, the academic community, and women in leadership across Nigeria.
A Message to MBS Students
The MOUAU Business School congratulates Professor Akanwa on this historic achievement and looks forward to the new chapter her leadership will bring to the university. We are proud to be part of an institution that continues to break barriers and set new standards.
We encourage all students, staff, and alumni of MBS to join us in celebrating this milestone and wishing our new Vice-Chancellor a successful and impactful tenure.'
